Amherst A-Z, 1759-2009
Elizabeth M. Sharpe, historian & writer
Sharpe will discuss the process of writing and assembling Amherst A to Z, 1759-2009, which chronicles the town’s transformation from a small agricultural community to a bustling university and college town. Look under “C” to learn the location of the Cold War Bunker and the Collapsing Skirt Factory, or to find out how Cambodians fleeing the Pol Pot regime came to settle in Amherst. “P” is for the Peace Vigil held on the Town Common every Sunday from 1966-73. Amherst writers Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Howard Garis (“Uncle Wiggily”) are featured along with an Irish servant who wrote a cookbook and a blacksmith who struggled to adapt to the automobile world. The book was published by the Amherst Historical Society to celebrate the town’s 250th anniversary in 2009.
