Museums Stars Program Continues in April

March 20, 2014

The Springfield Science Museum’s large rooftop telescope will be open for public sky gazing on Friday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the “Stars Over Springfield” observatory series. These programs are organized by the Museum and the Springfield Stars Club, and take place on the first Friday of each month from September through May. Each event features an introductory talk on topics such as space exploration, seasonal sights of the night sky, current astronomical research, or upcoming events like eclipses or comet appearances. This month, Tim Connolly from the Electron Microscope Lab at Baystate Medical Center will present “The Pathology of our Night Sky,” examining what telescopes allow us to see versus our naked eye.

Free Teacher Preview of Rainforest Exhibit

January 24, 2014

Next week, teachers are invited to view the new Rainforest Adventure special exhibition at the Springfield Science Museum, which is available for school tours through May 9. Those in attendance will be able to tour the exhibit, meet with staff to discuss field trips and curriculum connections, and participate in hands-on demonstrations from Conservation Kids: Stewards of the Earth, one of the many standing programs offered to visiting school groups by the Springfield Museums.

Rainforest Adventure Awaits Families at the Springfield Museums; Special Opening Day Celebration Scheduled for January 25

Young visitors to the Springfield Science Museum will be able to take a virtual excursion deep into the rainforest, thanks to the Museums’ newest traveling exhibit, Rainforest Adventure. The exhibit, designed by Stepping Stones Museum for Children, will be open January 25 through May 11, 2014, and is sponsored by United Bank.

Stored on a shelf for over 100 hundred years, a rare anthropological treasure was recently discovered in the Springfield Science Museum’s permanent collections. Originally cataloged as an “Aleutian hat,” the artifact had been preserved in museum collections for over a century before being identified last month as a war helmet from the Tlingit people of Alaska. Beautifully carved and with much of the original paint still visible, the helmet is one of a relatively small number in existence worldwide. Amazing Butterflies Set to Land at Museums

Every spring, butterflies migrate to New England from their winter homes in Mexico and points south. This spring and summer, the Springfield Science Museum will be the gathering point for more butterflies (and butterfly fans) than usual, thanks to the upcoming special exhibit titled Amazing Butterflies and a live walk-through enclosure titled “The Butterfly House.” Both will be open May 25 through September 2, 2013. The Springfield Science Museum is offering overnight camp-in programs for Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups. Museum Exhibit Explores Nature's Fury

Following the devastating tsunami that hit Indonesia in December 2004, the violent hurricanes which destroyed vast sections of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, and the horrific earthquake in Pakistan, concern about natural disasters has soared. The Springfield Science Museum will explore the causes and effects of some of the disastrous events that plague our planet in the special exhibition Earth Attacks: Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis, on view at the museum from February 18 through September 3, 2006.
