Science Museum Needs Volunteers

Springfield Science Museum

July 31, 2009

The Springfield Science Museum at the Quadrangle is recruiting volunteer docents to conduct tours and programs for children and adults.

Docents are volunteer museum educators.  New docents will attend classes to learn about the museum exhibits and techniques for sharing that knowledge with visitors, especially school groups.  New science docents will also learn about some of the exhibits in the new Museum of Springfield History.

Weekly docent training classes will begin in the fall, but applications are being accepted immediately. Classes will be held Wednesdays from 2-3:30 p.m. beginning late September 2009. Training ends in winter 2010, and new docents will begin to lead tours and programs in early spring 2010.  Docents are asked to give a minimum of 20 programs per year for two years.

In return for their service, docents receive a free, high-quality training program in science led by curators, scholars, and museum educators; discounts on Museum School courses; Museum Store discounts; free admission to Museums à la Carte programs; invitations to docent social events and more.
