Each year since 1866, the American Watercolor Society (AWS) has hosted a juried exhibition of exemplary watercolors by artist members of the organization. The Society’s 142nd traveling exhibition features more than 30 artists from the U.S., Canada, Singapore and Uruguay. The AWS was formed soon after the Civil War to promote the art of watercolor painting which previously had been viewed as purely a sketching medium. The organization boasts such distinguished past members as Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, J.G. Brown, John LaFarge and Andrew Wyeth. This year’s exhibit catalogue features a memoriam to Wyeth who died last year. Portraits, cityscapes, still lifes and abstract works are featured in the exhibition. Visitors will be amazed at the fine detail and depth of color that can be rendered in this striking and challenging medium.
