Frozen Up
This snowy rural scene, with its sense of tranquility and hominess, is the type of image for which Currier & Ives is best known. A man in a horse-drawn sleigh passes over a bridge near a waterwheel or grist mill while a loaded cart hitched to two healthy oxen stands in front of the house. White highlights on the trees and in the foreground help to create the frosty atmosphere of a cold winter's day.
