Currier & Ives sought to define American ideals and The Young Housekeepers, A Year After Marriage is a bright and joyful scene depicting an ideal Victorian family. Life blooms in bright flowers outdoors, and indoors a blooming baby spreads its arms wide as if greeting the viewer. After a year of marriage and the essential addition of a child, this young couple has matured into their roles.
