Winter Pastime
Ice skating was a popular recreational activity in both the country and in the city. This image, Winter Pastime, promoted the fresh air and outdoor activity associated with country life. Several other prints were created by Currier & Ives which show urban skating scenes as well. Several of the skaters on the pond in this scene hold hands and converse while others look on. In the background, there are some children sledding with toboggans, another popular winter activity.
