A Harbor For The Night
Sailboat moored along river's edge to right of center under moonlit sky. Four men gathered around a fire off to left. From the Inventory Listing of Sidney A. Alpert "A Harbor for the Night / (8.9 x 12.8) - S "
In this print, the river and shoreline are separated by a beam of light from the full moon. In a cozy harbor, a group of men gather around the warm light of a campfire. In the 19th century, riverboat travel was popular but unglamorous, and this calm scene paints an idealistic and idyllic picture.
For the purposes of dramatic effect and to better illuminate each image, many nighttime scenes produced by Currier & Ives feature full moons.
