Image for Abraham Lincoln: The Nation’s Martyr

Abraham Lincoln: The Nation’s Martyr

Black and white bust portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing slightly toward viewer's right. From the Inventory Listing of Sidney A. Alpert "Abraham Lincoln / The Nation's Martyr/ Und. - S"

Before his assassination, Lincoln was often the focus of political cartoons criticizing his performance as a politician and president. Lincoln's untimely death, however, redefined his status in the mind of the American public. Once caricatured for his lanky appearance, Lincoln was reverently depicted as a national martyr in this portrait. Currier & Ives ultimately published over 70 images of the slain president.
