Image for A Home In The Wilderness

A Home In The Wilderness

Winter scene of man with rifle and horse approaching cabin while boy ice skating and woman
and daughter feeding animals. From the Inventory Listing of Sidney A. Alpert "Home in the Wilderness, A/ (8x12.8) 1870 (New Best 50) - S"

This idealized winter view of the frontier features a log cabin in the woods with smoke gently rising from its chimney. A man and his son return home after a successful day of hunting. One child enjoys ice skating on the nearby frozen pond while another assists her mother in feeding the family's chickens. Currier & Ives' romantic scenes of the wilderness were instrumental in encouraging Easterners to consider moving west into the beautiful and bountiful land.
