The new Museum of Springfield History will continue its spring lecture series at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, with a talk titled “Crystal Products of the Frost King: Ice Harvesting and the Natural Ice Industry in New England.” The program will be held in the museum’s SIS Hall and is free with the price of museum admission.

Look closely: It advertises fuel not at $1.59 a gallon but at 15.9 cents. That was a good thing, considering that the 1911 seven-passenger Stevens-Duryea luxury touring car displayed around the corner got only seven miles a gallon.

At the close of the annual meeting of the Springfield Museums on September 23, Chairman of the Board Richard B. Collins announced a $4.3 million gift from an anonymous donor. The donor has requested that the gift remain anonymous until the spring of 2010, at which time the Museum of Springfield History will be named in the donor’s honor.

Spanish-style architecture in Springfield will be the topic of a walking tour on Saturday, July 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Local historian Steve Shultis will point out downtown architectural features that are similar to those found in Spain. Some examples are the Mudéjar-style (Moorish) brickwork on some of the buildings and the alternating red and white stone on the South Congregational Church which is similar to stone work on the great Mosque of Córdoba.

Racing begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.

Downtown Springfield's rapid development in the period between the Civil War and World War I led to the loss of most early buildings. On Saturday, June 13, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, local historian Bob McCarroll will lead a walking tour of houses remaining from the first half of the 19th century. Built when Springfield was still a town, these homes represent Federal and Greek Revival styles which predated the Victorian age.

The lithography firm of Currier & Ives produced more than 8,000 images, including pictures of newsworthy events and prints that reflected familiar all-American themes such as farm life, home and children, religion, sports and leisure, and westward expansion. To design their prints, the company used staff artists who are unknown today as well as a group of celebrated American artists. The work of some of these well-known artists will be highlighted in the exhibition Behind the Scenes: The Artists Who Worked for Currier & Ives, on view from June 10, 2008 through January 18, 2009, at the Museum of Fine Arts.

The Springfield Science Museum will celebrate Astronomy Day on Saturday, May 6, from noon to 4 p.m. Weather permitting, visitors will have an opportunity to look at sunspots through specially-filtered telescopes set up on the Quadrangle by museum staff and volunteers from the Springfield Stars Club. Visits to the museum's large rooftop observatory will take place throughout the afternoon.

The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 15th annual Ubora Award. The award is presented to an African American individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the Springfield community and exhibited excellence in the fields of science, education, humanities or the arts. The Springfield Museums have received a gift of $1,000,000 from Mr. Allen Swift of West Hartford to purchase the Verizon building at 85 Chestnut Street in Springfield for the purpose of creating a new history museum. Swift also donated his 1928, one-owner, Springfield-built Rolls-Royce automobile to form the basis of the new museum's transportation collection.
