SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Museums consortium joined the ranks of the most prestigious in the country by recently earning national accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums, officials announced on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, May 14 at 11 AM, the Springfield Museums hosted a public announcement of their accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition for a museum or museum consortium. The event took place in the Blake Court of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Attendees included Mayor Domenic Sarno, Congressman Richard Neal and other elected officials, as well as members of the Museums board and staff, volunteers, and donors.

Every spring, butterflies migrate to New England from their winter homes in Mexico and points south. This spring and summer, the Springfield Science Museum will be the gathering point for more butterflies (and butterfly fans) than usual, thanks to the upcoming special exhibit titled Amazing Butterflies and a live walk-through enclosure titled “The Butterfly House.” Both will be open May 25 through September 2, 2013. MassMutual is the Springfield Museums 2013 Premier Sponsor.

Two exhibitions featuring Japanese woodblock prints are now on display at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts. Prints for the People: Japanese Ukiyo-e and Currier & Ives features Japanese and American prints from the 19th century, while Skin Deep: Tattooed Warriors and Fantastic Beasts includes images that have inspired tattoo artists for over 150 years. All of the images in the new exhibits are from the D’Amour Museum’s acclaimed print collections, and both feature works that in some cases have not been on display in recent years.

On Sunday, April 21, the Springfield Museums will present a lecture by legendary photographer Bill Eppridge titled 1964: Beatlemania and America’s Changing Times. The lecture will take place at 2 pm in the Davis Auditorium of the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the same building that is hosting the current exhibit, The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes, which includes many images taken by Eppridge in the days and weeks following the band’s arrival in North America. The talk is free with Museum admission.

The Springfield Museums have announced their slate of activities for the upcoming school vacation week, April 15-19, 2013. The week-long program, titled Puppets Around the World, will feature performances by some of the region’s finest puppet ensembles, along with live animal demonstrations, interactive displays, planetarium shows, and hands-on art opportunities. All activities are free with the price of museum admission unless noted otherwise.

Modern Dialect: American Paintings from the John and Susan Horseman Collection will be on view in the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts from November 20, 2012-February 24, 2013. The exhibition illustrates American Modernism from the 1920s to the beginning of World War II, a period marked by significant change and compounded by the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s. The more than sixty major American Scene paintings in the exhibition illustrate the changes the nation underwent through the eyes of American artists who were often poor and out of work.

Lisa Hoke creates colorful art out of things that we all encounter every day: paper, cardboard, product packaging, paper plates, plastic cups, matchbook covers, printed advertising material, and all sorts of other discarded flotsam and jetsam from our consumer society. She has assembled an intriguing and vibrant collection of these materials in the installation Love, American Style, on view at the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts through May 26 of next year.

The Springfield Science Museum is offering overnight camp-in programs for Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups. Scouts participate in a variety of hands-on activities that will help them earn the requirements for badges, belt loops or try-its. All groups will see a planetarium show and decorate a T-shirt with a screen-print design. They will also enjoy an evening pizza party, and a light breakfast in the morning.

Spanish-style architecture in Springfield will be the topic of a walking tour on Saturday, July 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Local historian Steve Shultis will point out downtown architectural features that are similar to those found in Spain. Some examples are the Mudéjar-style (Moorish) brickwork on some of the buildings and the alternating red and white stone on the South Congregational Church which is similar to stone work on the great Mosque of Córdoba.

On Saturday, June 13, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, local historian Bob McCarroll will lead a walking tour of houses remaining from the first half of the 19th century. Built when Springfield was still a town, these homes represent Federal and Greek Revival styles which predated the Victorian age.

The lithography firm of Currier & Ives produced more than 8,000 images, including pictures of newsworthy events and prints that reflected familiar all-American themes such as farm life, home and children, religion, sports and leisure, and westward expansion. To design their prints, the company used staff artists who are unknown today as well as a group of celebrated American artists. April 2 at 2 p.m. with Currier & Ives: Constructing What It Meant to Be American. The talk will be presented by Barry O'Connell, professor of English at Amherst College.

March 19 at 2 p.m. with Emancipation Day: Postbellum Visions of African Americans in Currier & Ives' Darktown Prints. The talk will be presented by James Smethurst, associate professor in the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The African Hall Subcommittee of the Springfield Museums is seeking nominations for the 15th annual Ubora Award. The award is presented to an African American individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the Springfield community and exhibited excellence in the fields of science, education, humanities or the arts. Nominations must be received by March 31, 2006.

The Springfield Museums will kick off school vacation week on Saturday, February 18 with the opening of the special exhibition Earth Attacks! Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. A variety of family activities and performances will explain the science behind nature's fury. Activities are free with the price of admission to the Museums.

The Springfield Museums have received a gift of $1,000,000 from Mr. Allen Swift of West Hartford to purchase the Verizon building at 85 Chestnut Street in Springfield for the purpose of creating a new history museum. Swift also donated his 1928, one-owner, Springfield-built Rolls-Royce automobile to form the basis of the new museum's transportation collection.

Following the devastating tsunami that hit Indonesia in December 2004, the violent hurricanes which destroyed vast sections of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida, and the horrific earthquake in Pakistan, concern about natural disasters has soared. The Springfield Science Museum will explore the causes and effects of some of the disastrous events that plague our planet in the special exhibition Earth Attacks: Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis, on view at the museum from February 18 through September 3, 2006.

Dr. Adolfo Roitman, curator of the Shrine of the Book, which houses the Dead Sea Scroll collection at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, will present "From Serpent to Satan: The Story of Paradise in Literature and Art" at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts on February 2 at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is free to the public and will be followed by a reception with Dr. Roitman.
