July 2, 2014

The “Summer Spectacular Family Series” at Springfield Museums continues during the week of July 14. The six-week series includes a host of programs and events every weekday through August 15. All programs and performances are free with admission unless otherwise noted.

Each week, top-tier performers from around the region will appear at 1 PM in the Davis Auditorium on “Wonderful Wednesdays,” “Tanglewood Thursdays,” and “Fantastic Fridays.” Performances during week two of the series include Dig Into Reading Magic Show by Steve Wronker (Wednesday July 16), Cinderella by Tanglewood Marionettes  (Thursday July 17), and Hip Hop Dimensions by Poetry in Motion Crew (Friday July 18 – TWO SHOWS, 12: 30 and 2:30 p.m.).

On Friday, July 18 general admission is free to all visitors through the Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Friday program. This year, 66 museums and cultural institutions across Massachusetts will participate in the program. Last year alone, the program saw 165,000 people and the Foundation hopes to reach more than 200,000 this year. The free admission does not include planetarium tickets or special exhibit fees. The Free Fun Fridays program is intended for individuals and families; large groups are discouraged from attending on this day due to anticipated crowds.

During each week of the Spectacular, there will also be live reptile demonstrations on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM, interactive “Music in the Museums”  programs for parents and children ages 0-5 (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 – 11:45 AM), and Dinosaur Trivia (Tuesdays, 11 AM – 2 PM).

Also not to be missed are Hands-on Activity Carts, which are mobile learning stations staffed by museum educators (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 am-1:30 PM) and activity and dress-up stations in the Hasbro Games Art Discovery Center (daily, noon – 4 PM).

Other highlights include daily planetarium shows (additional fee required) and impromptu science demonstrations by the Roving Scientist at the Museum’s Family Science Adventures Mondays through Fridays from 11 AM – 2 PM.

Free, secure onsite parking is available.
