Museums' Festival of Flowers Returns
General Museum News
March 13, 2014
The coming of spring also brings the return of the Springfield Museums’ annual Festival of Flowers, April 3-6, 2014. This year’s celebration will feature over 50 objects from the art, history and science collections creatively interpreted by local florists, designers, and garden club members. The festival, once a mainstay of the Museums calendar, returned last year to the delight of area flower fans, and this year’s event features even more floral arrangements inspired by some of the Museums’ signature collection items.
The Festival begins with a special Culture & Cocktails event on Thursday April 3 from 5 to 8 pm. Guests can view the colorful arrangements in all four museums, enjoy a Floral Fashion show featuring hats adorned with fresh flowers, and watch as local florists go head-to-head in the Floral De¬sign Challenge using only surprise materials. The evening, which also includes music, specialty cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, is free for museum members and $20 for nonmembers (21 and over only). Also scheduled for April 3 is a Museums à la Carte lecture at 12:15 PM titled “Abigail’s Garden: The History of a New England Garden” by Laurie Ellen Pazzano, MA, Landscape Historian. The cost to attend is $2 for members, $4 nonmembers.
Other special events during the festival include a presentation titled “Nonstop Plants: A Garden for 365 Days with Margaret Roach” on Saturday, April 5 at 1 pm. After 15 years at Martha Stewart Living and a decade each at Newsday and The New York Times, Roach now writes the nationally acclaimed blog “A Way to Garden” and is author of the 2011 memoir, “And I Shall Have Some Peace There.” Tours by museum docents highlighting many of the floral interpretations will also be available on April 4-6 (11 am and noon; free with museum admission).
The Museum School will also offer courses related to the Festival. On Saturday, April 5, expert florist Bob Whitney will guide students on creating floral designs with spring flowers. Later in the month, a special class titled “Floral Design with Chocolate & Wine” will be led by Ruth Loiseau, master floral designer and White House special events florist” on April 15 from 6-8 pm. All levels of expertise are welcome. To register, call 413.263.6800, ext. 377 or 382, or visit www.springfieldmuseums.org.
