Currier & Ives Exhibition Extended
Michele & Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts
May 4, 2006
The Springfield Museums have announced that the popular exhibition Currier & Ives: An American Panorama, on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, has been extended until September 10, 2006. (Original closing date was June 4.)
Currier & Ives: An American Panorama features 150 hand-colored Currier & Ives lithographs depicting American landscapes; leisure activities such as hunting, yachting and horse racing; portraits of famous people; heroic activities such as firefighting; westward expansion; and important events in American history. The varied, idealized subjects of Currier & Ives prints reflected how 19th-century Americans wanted to see themselves and their nation.
After the exhibition closes, the Museum of Fine Arts will continue to present smaller, changing exhibits of Currier & Ives prints in the Lenore B. and Sidney A. Alpert Currier & Ives Gallery, the country's only permanent museum gallery devoted to the work of the "printmakers to the people."
Currier & Ives: An American Panorama is sponsored by Big Y World Class Market. The media sponsor is 88.5FM-WFCR, NPR News and Music for Western New England.
