SPRINGFIELD - For the second year in a row, the Springfield Museums have received a grant in the amount of $95,000 from MassMutual Financial Group for "Learning Together," a series of educational programs for Springfield Public School students. "Learning Together" addresses the goals of Step Up Springfield, the community-wide initiative that challenges the whole community to work together to promote academic proficiency and character development among Springfield's youth.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to partner with a community organization – the Springfield Museums – to support and promote the educational enrichment of our youth," said Ron Copes, corporate vice president, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). "MassMutual's focus in the community continues to center on the education of children in the public school system. We've been pleased with the results accomplished through our partnership with the Springfield Museums."

The "Learning Together" grant will support the following activities:

• Fee waivers for Springfield Public School students to participate in educational school group programs at the museums.

• Bus transportation for all Springfield fifth grade students to visit the Museums for grade-specific science and social studies programs that target the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and MCAS testing.

• Coupons for a free adult admission to encourage students to visit the Museums with their families.

• After-school outreach programs at the North End Youth Center, South End Community Center, and Springfield Day Nursery.

"We are very grateful to MassMutual for helping us carry out our commitment to provide quality educational programs to the community," said Joseph Carvalho, president and executive director of the Springfield Museums.

"Learning Together" activities will take place during the 2005/2006 school year. Throughout the year, the Museums, in consultation with the Springfield Public Schools and MassMutual, will evaluate the progress of the project and discuss ways to expand and refine the program in succeeding years.
