Abstract Paintings

Michele & Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts

January 24, 2008

The exhibit Abstract Paintings by Douglas Deihl is on view through April 13 in the Community Gallery at the Springfield Museum of Fine Arts.

Deihl's paintings are rich with color and texture created by many layers of oil paint on wood panels. The layers create a sense of space and depth, and within each work are shapes which are evocative of microscopic organisms or nebulae. Although the paintings are compact, they suggest the vastness of space or other worlds beyond our immediate view. The artist has left the paintings untitled because he prefers to allow the art to speak for itself.

Deihl is the director of Skinner's American Indian and Ethnographic Art department.
He is also an expert appraiser of Native American and Western art on the PBS TV series Antiques Roadshow.
