Volunteer Opportunity

General Museum News

May 3, 2007

The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum at the Quadrangle is recruiting volunteer docents to conduct tours and programs for children and adults.

No experience in art or education is necessary to become a docent, just an interest in art and in working with the public, especially children.

Although docent training classes will begin in the fall, applications are being accepted immediately and new volunteers will have opportunities to become familiar with the museums over the summer.

Beginning in September, classes will be held Monday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. and will provide new volunteers with in-depth knowledge about the museum galleries and collections. Topics to be covered include Greek and Roman antiquities, Egyptian burial art, the history of the museum and its Victorian-era founders, Chinese and Japanese decorative arts, and much more. In addition to learning about the exhibits, volunteers will receive instruction on tour techniques and have ample opportunity to observe tours in progress.

Docents who complete the training program and become active tour guides will also have the option to take docent classes at the Museum of Fine Arts beginning in 2008.

Volunteer docents receive free admission to the Museums and to Museums à la Carte programs, plus discounts on Museum School courses and trips, and Museum Store purchases. Social events such as a holiday party and a docent picnic are also offered.
