Money, Museums & Masterpieces
Richard Muhlberger, former director, Springfield Art Museums, adjunct professor of art and architectural history, Western New England University
The public appear to prefer paintings that cost millions of dollars more than those that don’t cost as much. We are taken inside a sale of contemporary painting that fetched a higher price than any work of art ever sold at auction. The history of collecting art and of museums is traced from the start until today. The speaker tells the odd story of meeting Andy Warhol, or thinking he did, at Warhol’s first one man exhibition. Examples are given of museum-goers connecting with art to share something larger and more enduring than themselves. The talk will conclude with a lesson in developing taste in art.
