Norman Rockwell’s World: Tradition and Nostalgia in Twentieth Century American Art
Guy McLain, director, Wood Museum of Springfield History
This lecture will examine the significance of a collection of 21 Rockwell drawings commissioned by MassMutual, currently on exhibit in the Wood Museum of Springfield History. The presentation will also explore some of the controversies surrounding Rockwell’s work. Throughout his career Rockwell was rejected by the art world establishment but loved by the American public. What is Rockwell’s place in American art and what is the significance of his contribution? This lecture will explore these questions as well as take a look at the current frenzy for his work in today’s art market.
