American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O'Keeffe to Rockwell
Teresa A. Carbone, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of American Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art
What does modern mean? We no longer see the modernist “progress” of art as a rigid march toward increasingly unreadable, abstract imagery. Over the course of many decades, modern art has represented an encounter with the remade world of the twentieth century-- a world that had stopped staying still and stopped being the same. The works selected for the exhibition represent the wide range of pictorial styles in which American artists expressed their experiences in the culture of modern America. This talk will explore how each of the objects is inscribed with an artist’s encounter with a remade environment and a society in flux.
