The Romantic Roots of Steampunk
Lynne Z. Bassett, costume and textile historian
Romantic philosophy of the early nineteenth century embraced imagination, history, religion, sentimentality, spiritualism, and nature as an antidote to the stresses of the new industrial economy and its incumbent social upheaval. All of these ideas affected the appearance of clothing in the period. This lecture examines Romantic Era thought to explain why costume looks as it does from 1810 to 1860, and then how those thought patterns and clothing styles have been revived almost 200 years later in Goth and Steampunk fashions.
