The Duryea Motor Wagon: The First Successful Automobile with Arch Battista
On September 20, 1883, the very first successful gasoline powered ‘horseless carriage’ traveled the streets of Springfield, MA. Brothers Charles and Frank Duryea designed and created their motor wagon by inserting an internal combustion engine into a horse-drawn buggy. America’s love affair with the automobile began on that date, one hundred thirty years ago, right here in Springfield.
