Dictionaries and How They Got This Way: The History of Merriam-Webster in Springfield
John M. Morse, President and Publisher of Merriam-Webster Inc.
The lecture will tell the story of Merriam-Webster in Springfield from its founding in 1831 to the present day. The lecture features images, some newly found, of the persons and locations that have figured prominently in the company’s history. Interweaved with the images, the narrative will describe challenges faced by the company and the responses and innovations introduced by the company to rise to these challenges, including, most recently, the response to the transition from print to digital dictionaries.
