Fashioning Rebellion: Cultural Memory and the Leather Jacket
Matthew Noferi, Ph.D. Student in American and New England Studies, Boston University
The black leather jacket has been a symbol of diverse cultural concepts throughout history, but one thread that connects them all is a notion of rebellion. Through an interdisciplinary material culture study of that influential piece of fashion, this lecture will approach the various meanings the black leather jacket has held for both its creators and its wearers. Ideas of celebrity, memory and change will be called upon to investigate why the leather jacket and material culture in general, are important to understanding the way we view ourselves in relation to society at large.
