Butterflies, Climate Change, and You: A Case Study of the Power of Citizen Science
Tom Lautzenheiser, MS, Mass Audubon Regional Scientist
Experienced naturalists accept that climate is changing based on their personal observations of plants and animals over the past decades. Such personal experiences are generally untested scientifically, however, leaving their meaning potentially unclear. When thousands of these experiences are analyzed together, however, their collective power is unmistakable. The data collected by the Mass Audubon-coordinated Butterfly Atlas Project and the Massachusetts Butterfly Club since 1985 provides an inspiring example of how volunteer naturalists contribute to increased understanding of ongoing changes to Massachusetts’ natural world.
