The Untold Story of Springfield’s William G. Morgan, Inventor of Volleyball
Joel B. Dearing, Assistant Professor of Physical Education, Springfield College, former Head Women’s Volleyball Coach, and author
This presentation will feature the Springfield connections to the invention of volleyball. Highlights will include a look at the game’s creator, William G. Morgan, and his very unlikely enrollment and graduation from the YMCA Training School (now known as Springfield College). Unique and surprising connections between Morgan and James Naismith (inventor of basketball) will be presented along with a summary of the early international development of the sport of volleyball. Little known facts related to volleyball “then and now” will allow for some concluding open forum Q&A from those in attendance.
