Vincent van Gogh: 900 paintings, 1200 drawings. What's with such universal popularity?
Charles B. Hayward, MFA
It seems easy to recognize a Van Gogh. Distinctive color, expressive distortions, bold surfaces, unique empathy, compositional complexity, familiar iconic images, and all pulled together with such mastery that each work communicates magically with virtually all mankind. Yet, in spite of this popular consensus an attempt to decode why and how these works have such universal impact, remains elusive. So our plan today is to probe through a collection of Van Gogh drawings and paintings, some very familiar, some unfamiliar, and work to define the magic behind the astonishing attraction of his work.
