Archaeology of the Western Front: Bunkers, Bombs, Bullets & Booze
Ed Klekowski & Libby Klekowski, authors, PBS documentary producers
A tour of the Western Front. In many areas of France along the old Western Front (1914-1918), the woodlands hide the remains of war: old trenches, ruins of concrete bunkers, unexploded artillery shells, grenades and many, many wine bottles, gin flasks, and other vessels for booze. For the past few years, Ed and Libby have spent many interesting days in the French woods exploring and photographing these artifacts of war. Their discoveries were the basis of two World War One documentaries produced for public television (WGBY Springfield): "Model T's to War: American Ambulances in WW I" and "Yanks Fight the Kaiser: The Story of the Yankee Division." These walks in the woods were also the inspiration for our book, Eyewitnesses to the Great War, American Writers, Reporters, Volunteers, and Soldiers in France 1914-1918, published by McFarland Press.
