An entertaining and engaging hands-on experience with one of the most important cultural icons in history: the guitar. This exhibit is comprised of three elements: the science of sound; the evolution, engineering, and design of the guitar; and the instrument’s cultural impact. Visitors become engaged in an experience that is visual, tactile, and aural. The exhibit includes science, history, pop culture, music, videos, dozens of instruments, lots of "touchables" and "playables," and just about everything else that makes the guitar incredible.

$9 per person; includes special exhibit and program fees. All ages welcome; most appropriate for ages 10+. Program capacity: 30 children


Arrivals  9:30 AM
Meet and greet with fellow homeschoolers.

Good Vibrations: The Science of Sound 10-11 AM
Explore the science of sounds. Through hands-on demonstrations, discover the variety of ways sound can be produced.  Construct a "musical" instrument and learn about resonance, vibration, and frequency.

Special Exhibit Exploration 11 AM-NOON
Enjoy this two part exhibition housed in two separate Museum buildings. The Science Museum features hands on activities and features the worlds largest playable guitar! The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum focuses on the history of the guitar.

Lunch Break  NOON-1 PM  
Enjoy freshly-made sandwiches, salads, paninis and more at our new Blake House Café (or bring a brown bag lunch) while you visit with fellow homeschoolers. Museum staff will also be on hand to answer any programming questions.

Night Sky Planetarium Show 1-2 PM  
What is that you’re seeing in the sky at night? With the planetarium stars as the backdrop, find out how to locate and identify celestial objects, planets, and constellations as the seasons change.

Museum Exploration   2-5 PM  
Tour all our world-class museums on your own.
