Slavery in the Connecticut Valley in the 1700s
Robert H. Romer, author and professor, Amherst College
Slavery was widespread in colonial times in the Connecticut Valley, where most of the “important people” – especially the ministers – owned one or more black slaves. From Springfield and Longmeadow to Greenfield and Northfield, enslaved African-Americans were important members of our communities. This talk is based on Prof. Romer’s 2009 book – “Slavery in the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts.”
