The Berkshire Cottage: Symbol of the American Gilded Age
Dr. Carole Owens, author, Mass Humanities Scholar in Residence and lecturer
The Gilded age was 52 years in American history from the close of the Civil War until World War I. It was a time when vast new wealth was disproportionately distributed into a few hands. A time when an agrarian society became a manufacturing society; when America jostled for a place at the international table; when we became who we are today.
