Masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age in the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts
Jessica Maier, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Art History, Mount Holyoke College
In the seventeenth century, the Netherlands emerged from major religious and political upheaval to enter a time of unprecedented prosperity. The changed cultural circumstances had major implications for the arts. While religious commissions largely evaporated along with noble patronage, a new class of collector developed: wealthy merchants who delighted in buying pictures of recognizable places and familiar scenes that could be purchased, like any commodity, on the open market. This lecture will trace how the demise of traditional genres paved the way for the rise of new ones—such as landscapes, still lifes, and scenes of everyday life—and explore how painters deftly navigated the shifting winds of the art world.
