A Window to the World of Honey Bees: Beekeeping at the Springfield Science Museum
Ellen-Rose Savulis, Ph.D., Curator of Anthropology
David Stier, M.A., Director of the Springfield Science Museum and Facilities Management
Apis mellifera, or the western honey bee as she is more commonly known, has been revered for thousands of years for her ability to make a sweet substance that delights the human palate. However, most people know little about the honey bee’s importance as nature’s master pollinator. Approximately one-third of the average diet has been pollinated by them, from nuts, carrots, and onions to apples, oranges, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, and peaches. This presentation will cover the history of beekeeping, the design and safety issues faced in a public, urban environment, and the plight of the honey bee, which is disappearing across the globe at an alarming rate.
