Springfield Museums Events March
Sacred Places: Claus’s Journey
November 15th, 2:00 pm
Springfield Science Museum
This program has been planned in conjunction with the special exhibition Claus Mroczynski: Sacred Places of the Southwest, on view at the Science Museum. The exhibition features stunning black and white photographs of ancient ruins in the rugged deserts, caves, mesas and mountains of the region. The Sacred Places project began in the mid-1980s. Mroczynski’s sensitivity and respect for these locales earned him access to hidden sites in Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Pauline Domanski Mroczynski, Claus Mroczynski’s widow, will discuss how Claus approached the work, negotiated with the Indian tribes, and was given access to the ruins to produce his extraordinary photos. Claus Mroczynski studied with Ansel Adams and other renowned photographers. His work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, the Denver Art Museum and others. Pauline Domanski is a graduate of the Juilliard School and a former international opera singer who currently teaches singing in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
