Springfield Artist Chester Harding
Gloria Russell, art historian and critic
Chester Harding (1792-1866) was among the last of the successful American portrait painters during the Victorian era. A resident of Springfield from 1830 until his death, his highly accomplished work won acclaim in this country and in Europe. A short walk in the neighborhood of the Quadrangle covers the territory where Chester Harding and his family lived, and a visit to the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts will acquaint the audience with Harding's work in the context of American art in the 19th century.
Tickets: Free for members of the Springfield Museums and the Armoury-Quadrangle Civic Association, $5 per person for nonmembers.
